The Best of Both Worlds
I remember when I finished college and was trying to decide what to do with my life, that I was really torn between finding a job in my field of study or becoming a business owner. In some ways, I really wanted the experience of working for someone else in my chosen field, but in other ways, I wanted the freedom of running my own business.
In the end, the latter prevailed and I decided to run my own business. A few months after that, I was a self storage owner. It started out as a small company, which I ran myself and it is now a large company with units all over the country. It was a good decision economically, but sometimes I still wonder if I missed out on something by not following my dreams.
I was talking to my parents about this the other day and they both encouraged me to go back and get a job in my field. They said, even if I just tried it for a few months and decided that it wasn’t for me, at least I could stop with all the what ifs and know that I had tried the best of both worlds.
