Overwhelmed by the Yellow Pages
Sometimes I feel that living in a big city is a big challenge. It’s not like a small town where you know the phone numbers of most of the businesses off by heart, but it is more like trying to remember phone numbers from people halfway around the world. In fact, sometimes I wonder if I have a phobia of the phone book, as anytime that I try to use it I get scared that I will not find what I’m looking for.
Take for example, what I was looking for yesterday at work. My boss asked me to look in the phone book for "web design New York", so that we could create a new look for our corporate website. You would think that there would be very few web designers here in New York, but boy was I wrong.
Not only was their page after page after page of listings, but it was such a mess that I didn’t know who I should call. I think it only took about 15 phone calls before I was able to find a firm that would be interested in our business. Needless to say, I just dread using the phone book.
