Entrepreneurial Savvy
Before I moved from Maryland back to Ohio, there was a little house — what most would call a cottage — that we drove past every Sunday after church. Since we were in the greater Washington, DC area, that little house was probably worth close to $200,000. Now it was a clean-looking house with a tidy yard, but the siding was faded and in serious need of painting. The grounds needed landscaping and the windows were due for an upgrade. And still this teeny house was worth a fifth of a million dollars. Such is the way of real estate in the suburbs of DC.
What was always a subject of comment as we drove past each Sunday afternoon was a limo sitting in front of the house. The irony was that this brand new luxury vehicle — always immaculately cleaned and polished, the tires pristine, the windows smug free — cost more than the house it was parked in front of.
Business must have been good, because within six months, a matching limousine, this one white, joined the other in front of the teeny, tiny house. I think about his business every so often and hope that he’s still doing well — hopefully able to move into a house that’s bigger than his limos and worth more, too.
